Bursary vs loan — the practical difference

Bursary Funding you normally do not repay.

For qualifying students within the bursary rules. It can include approved tuition plus selected allowances.

Loan Funding you must repay.

Mainly relevant where income is above the normal bursary limit but still within the loan band, subject to the loan rules.

Learning materialsCurrent NSFAS bursary page displays .May be covered.NSFAS warns that displayed allowance figures must be aligned to the latest DHET guideline; PathLens therefore shows the number with this caveat rather than calling it a verified 2026 cap.

About the amounts above

The 2026 eligibility guideline confirms the allowance categories and says NSFAS publishes the amounts annually. The NSFAS bursary-scheme page currently displays the figures above, but also warns they must be aligned with the latest approved DHET guidelines. So they are shown as the current NSFAS website display, not represented as independently verified 2026 caps.

What does “gross combined household income” mean?

The income NSFAS counts before tax and other deductions.

UnmarriedYour income + parent(s)

If a legal guardian applies, your income + legal guardian(s).

MarriedYour income + spouse

NSFAS combines those gross incomes.

Over 18Parents can still count

Turning 18 does not automatically make you independent for NSFAS.

IndependentOnly your income may count

Current NSFAS guidance says this applies if you are over 34 and financially self-sufficient, or legally emancipated by a court.

How long can parental income apply? If you are unmarried, being 18, 21 or even older does not by itself remove your parent(s) from the household-income test. NSFAS currently says applicants 34 or younger use its declaration process to verify parent/guardian details. If you are over 34 and financially self-sufficient, only your own gross income is considered. A court-emancipated applicant is also assessed on their own income.

Which grants count for the NSFAS automatic financial test?

The 2026 NSFAS guideline includes Child Support, Foster Child and Care Dependency grants, including if you received one within the previous three years of applying.

SRD does not count for this automatic rule. The guideline excludes Social Relief of Distress and the COVID-19 special SRD grant.

If NSFAS verifies a qualifying SASSA grant, you automatically meet the financial eligibility part of the bursary test. You still need to meet the other institution, programme, registration, citizenship/residence and academic rules.

NSFAS household income

When do my parents' incomes count?

Simply being over 18 does not make you independent. If you are unmarried, NSFAS generally combines your gross income with your parent(s)' gross income. If you have a legal guardian, the guardian's gross income is used instead.

If you are married, NSFAS combines your income with your spouse's.

Only your own gross income is considered when NSFAS treats you as an independent learner. Current NSFAS guidance specifically identifies someone who is over 34 and financially self-sufficient, or someone legally emancipated by a court.

NSFAS's 2026 supporting-document guidance says the declaration form is for applicants 34 or younger and is used to verify parent/guardian details.
